Structural Steel Sourcing Guide for PEB Industrial Sheds

A component-by-component engineering procurement checklist: Selecting the ideal steel grades, sections, and primary mill certifications for main columns, rafters, purlins, and crane runways.

1. The Anatomy of a High-Performance PEB Industrial Shed

An industrial Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) shed is not a simple assembly of steel; it is a precision-engineered structural system designed to resist complex combinations of dead loads, equipment loads, seismic shaking (IS 1893), and intense tropical cyclonic wind gusts (IS 875 Part 3).

Every structural member in a PEB has distinct functional demands. Using an incorrect steel grade or procuring secondary, uncertified material creates severe structural vulnerabilities that can result in roof sag, crane derailment, or catastrophic framing failure during storms.

This procurement guide outlines the optimal steel specifications for each subsystem within a PEB shed, based on over 35 years of steel supply experience to premier fabricators across Western India.

2. Primary Framing: Built-Up E350 Plates vs. Universal Columns

The primary frame comprises the rigid portal rafters and columns that span across the width of the industrial building. Sourcing managers have two proven primary pathways:

A. Built-Up Tapered Sections using E350 Steel Plates

For large clear-spans exceeding 24 meters, fabricators use automated Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) lines to fabricate tapered I-beams. The industry gold standard for this application is IS 2062 Grade E350 BR / B0 Plates.

  • Web Plates (6mm to 10mm): High yield strength (350 MPa) prevents web crippling and shear buckling while keeping dead weight minimal.
  • Flange Plates (12mm to 25mm): Absorbs high bending tensile and compressive stresses at the knee and crown connections.
  • Base Plates (25mm to 80mm): Distributes massive vertical column reaction loads evenly onto foundation grouting.

B. Rolled Parallel Flange Columns (JSPL UC & SAIL WPB)

For high-bay warehouses, multi-span frames, and intermediate columns, fabricators increasingly opt for hot-rolled JSPL Universal Columns (UC). With a depth-to-width ratio close to 1:1, Universal Columns offer high radius of gyration (ry) along the weak axis, completely bypassing the weeks of cutting, fit-up, and welding required for built-up box columns.

3. Secondary Framing: GP Slit Coils for C & Z Purlins

Secondary framing elements—specifically roof purlins and wall girts—transfer cladding and wind suction forces directly to the primary rafters.

Instead of heavy, hot-rolled channels, PEB manufacturers employ cold roll-formed C and Z purlins manufactured from Galvanized Plain (GP) Slit Coils:

  • Zinc Coating: Minimum 120 GSM to 275 GSM conforming to IS 277 / ASTM A653 ensures 25+ years of corrosion protection without requiring periodic repainting.
  • Thickness Range: Typically 1.5mm to 3.0mm high-strength galvanized steel (yield strength 245 to 345 MPa).
  • Slit Width Accuracy: Precise coil slitting with minimal edge burr ensures smooth passage through roll-forming machine rollers, eliminating jam-ups and profile twist.

4. Crane Runway Girders: Heavy JSPL Universal Beams (UB)

In heavy fabrication sheds and steel service centers, overhead Electric Overhead Traveling (EOT) cranes (ranging from 5 MT to 50 MT capacity) place intense dynamic fatigue and lateral surge loads on the runway girders.

Built-up welded girders in crane service frequently suffer from weld fatigue cracks along the top-flange-to-web weld bead due to localized wheel contact stresses. To eliminate this point of failure, structural consultants specify hot-rolled JSPL Universal Beams (such as UB 457x191, UB 533x210, UB 610x229, and UB 914x305):

The Heavy Crane Girder Advantage

Hot-rolled Universal Beams have a seamless monolithic root radius between the web and flange, eliminating weld fatigue cracking. Paired with an IS 2062 top cap channel or plate, rolled JSPL UB sections provide the ultimate stiffened rail bed for long, trouble-free crane operation.

5. Bracing & Mezzanines: SAIL Angles, Channels & Chequered Plates

A robust PEB shed relies on secondary bracing and floor systems to maintain global structural stability:

  • Wind Bracing (SAIL Equal Angles): Roof diagonal cross-bracing and side-wall column bracing utilize certified SAIL Equal Angles (e.g. 50x50x6 mm up to 100x100x10 mm) acting in tension to stabilize the shed against longitudinal wind forces.
  • Eaves Struts & Fascia (SAIL ISMC Channels): Standard medium channels (ISMC 100 to ISMC 250) provide perimeter tie-ins and support rainwater gutter systems.
  • Mezzanine Office Flooring (Chequered Plates): High-traction teardrop chequered plates (3mm to 8mm) provide skid-resistant, durable flooring for factory administration offices, elevated catwalks, and maintenance stairways.

6. Sourcing Checklist & 5-Point Mill Test Certificate (MTC) Verification

Before accepting structural steel delivery at your fabrication yard, your QA/QC team should enforce this 5-point verification checklist:

Verification Check What to Look For Risk of Non-Compliance
1. Physical Mill Stamp Manufacturer logo (SAIL / TATA / JSPL), heat number, and size hard-stamped or painted on steel surface. Untraceable steel may be secondary re-rolled material prone to cracking.
2. Chemical Composition Carbon ≤ 0.20%, Sulphur ≤ 0.045%, Phosphorus ≤ 0.045%, CEV ≤ 0.42%. Excess sulfur/phosphorus triggers brittle hot-cracks during submerged arc welding.
3. Minimum Yield Strength Min 350 N/mm² for E350; min 250 N/mm² for E250. Sub-strength plates cause excessive rafter deflection and permanent sag under load.
4. Impact Toughness Guaranteed Charpy V-Notch test (min 27J at 0°C for B0 grade). Lack of low-temperature toughness risks sudden brittle fracture under shock loads.
5. Weighbridge Slips Computerized certified weighment slip matching vehicle gross and tare weight. Inaccurate weight estimates lead to billing discrepancies and transport axle overloads.
